The hum of the Normandy as it burns through space is something that resonates bone deep, thrumming in the hollow of her chest beside the beat of her heart. It's something she finds herself more and more aware of as they inch their way back from the Omega-4 Relay toward whatever is waiting for them back in Alliance space. There have been long conversations. She's written reports, made some of her goodbyes. From here to Earth, it's a short run.
Contrary to what she should feel, now that the decision's been made and they're closing in on what could be her last stop, she finds the tension has been melting off. There's something sure to her step - as if there wasn't usually. She doesn't bother to knock before making her way into Life Support, a cup of tea in each hand. The steam coming off both is making her hands sweat.
He is to be dropped off at the Citadel, in not very long at all now. Kolyat is still there, from his occasional messages. If he does not truly know how to be a father, he can at least be present and let his son take what he needs from him.
It is long since time that he settled. He cannot return to being purposelessly adrift among the stars again, not after this journey. Not after Shepard.
Most of his time is spent meditating in his cabin, as usual, and he is not surprised about her arrival. She knows where to find him, and she does.
"I am here." Soft, as he turns to look at her. "You made tea?"
"I can't promise it'll be good," she warns, moving to the table where she sets both cups down. She's matter of fact about pulling the other chair around to his, the legs squealing against the floor as she drags it over. "But I expect you to lie to me if it's not."
Sitting down, knee bumping companionably against his thigh, Shepard pulls one of the mugs to her. She waits to drink though, instead breathing in the steam twisting off the surface.
He isn't surprised at her change of the seats, though it does bring a warmth to him that he was not expecting, his leg pressing against hers a little as he leaves it there.
There's a smile, just a little one lurking at the corners of his mouth and in his eyes, and he picks up his cup and lets it warm his hands for a long moment before he takes a sip. "Your warning was unnecessary." Soft and easy. "It is good."
